Speaking & Presentation Skills – Curriculum and Assessment

Audience and entry requirements

Who is this programme for?

Professionals, managers and project leads who present and discuss results, proposals or specialist topics in English.

What are the entry requirements?

You should be able to communicate in English about familiar workplace topics. A short speaking sample and your presentation goal help set the appropriate difficulty before booking. No external language certificate is required.

Scope and learning format

8 weeks with four subject modules and four live sessions. Session lengths, total tuition hours and the assessment window are specified in your individual course plan before booking. A duration in weeks does not itself specify a number of tuition hours.

Which competencies will you demonstrate?

  • Structure a professional presentation with a purpose, coherent flow and clear key message.
  • Explain specialist content through examples and appropriate language.
  • Use transitions and summaries to guide the audience.
  • Respond to questions and clarify ambiguous points.
  • Improve your presentation using specific feedback.

The curriculum

1. Audience, purpose and key message

Tailor a presentation to a specific audience, prioritise information and build a coherent narrative.

Scope / allocation

Weeks 1–2; first live session as scheduled.

Evidence and output

An outline and short opening for your own professional presentation.

2. Explain clearly and use visuals

Explain technical terms, link ideas, describe numbers and charts; use slides to support the message.

Scope / allocation

Weeks 3–4; second live session as scheduled.

Evidence and output

A revised presentation segment with a justified choice of visual.

3. Manage questions and discussion

Clarify questions, respond to objections, acknowledge limits to your knowledge and connect contributions.

Scope / allocation

Weeks 5–6; third live session as scheduled.

Evidence and output

A question-and-answer exercise with spontaneous follow-up questions and documented feedback.

4. Present, reflect and transfer

Deliver a complete short presentation with questions and translate feedback into a personal improvement plan.

Scope / allocation

Weeks 7–8; fourth live session and assessment window as scheduled.

Evidence and output

An independent final presentation, responses to questions and reasoned self-reflection.

How your work is assessed

Weighting: 70 %

Prepared short presentation

An original English presentation on an agreed professional topic followed by brief self-reflection.

10-minute presentation + 5-minute reflection

  • Purpose, structure and key message: 30%.
  • Audience relevance, examples and clarity: 30%.
  • Appropriate language and fluency: 25%.
  • Reasoned reflection and practical transfer: 15%.

Weighting: 30 %

Question-and-answer session

Spontaneous responses to at least three questions about the topic. Clarifying a question or defining the limits of an answer is permitted.

10 minutes

  • Understanding and relevant response: 40%.
  • Intelligibility and context-appropriate language: 30%.
  • Clarification, interaction and handling knowledge limits: 30%.

Pass requirements

The Academy assessment certificate requires at least 70 out of 100 weighted overall points and at least 60% in every assessment component. The initial diagnostic task is not graded. These thresholds are Academy programme rules, not pass marks prescribed by ISO/IEC17024. Failed components may be retaken under the general Academy assessment rules.

Language work samples use a 0–4 scale for each criterion: 0 = not demonstrated; 1 = severely limited and task not achieved; 2 = partly achieved with substantial ambiguity; 3 = mostly achieved independently and intelligibly; 4 = achieved confidently, clearly and appropriately. The component result is the weighted criterion score divided by 4 and expressed as a percentage. Accent-free speech is not a criterion; intelligibility and task achievement matter.

Permitted resources and AI

Your own slides, cue cards and a short source list are permitted. Simply reading a complete script written by someone else does not demonstrate independent performance. Generative AI may be used in preparation only if disclosed. Live-generated answers, automatic translation and coaching during assessment are not permitted.

Identity and independent work

Before the final check, the invigilator verifies identity against a valid photo identification document. For live-online assessment, this is checked personally during the video appointment. A copy of the document or a recording is not required solely for this check.

The common assessment rules also cover retakes, reasonable adjustments, appeals, confidentiality and certificate authorisation.

Assessment and Certificate Rules

What your certificate demonstrates

Academy Assessment Certificate in Speaking & Presentation Skills

Scope of the credential
Records successful assessment of an English short presentation and question-and-answer session under the published ELA-PRG-SPS rubric.
How to interpret the qualification
Not a general CEFR level award or external language qualification. The result relates to the professional presentation task assessed.
Assessment date and currency
Under Academy policy, this certificate is valid for a maximum of three years from its date of issue. It is issued only after all programme and assessment requirements have been met and the award decision has been documented. The validity period does not start on enrolment or at the beginning of the course. The actual validity period and expiry date are stated on the certificate; a shorter period applies only when expressly specified in the relevant course or assessment programme. There is no automatic extension. Renewal requires a documented review of current knowledge and application appropriate to the programme, using recent evidence and/or a suitable update or competence assessment. Repurchasing the entire course is not a blanket requirement. A renewed Academy certificate is also valid for no more than three years from its issue date. Attendance and passing an assessment remain verifiable historical facts tied to their dates; they do not provide indefinite validity as evidence of current competence.

This programme applies to deliveries whose agreed course and assessment plan explicitly references this revision. Existing bookings retain their agreed terms.

Programme questions

Do I need fluent English already?

You need a foundation for discussing familiar workplace topics. The course develops presentation skills and relevant language; the initial assessment establishes whether the format fits.

Can I bring my own presentation?

Yes, if you may lawfully use the content. Remove confidential or personal information or replace it with fictional examples.

Is an accent marked as a mistake?

No. Assessment focuses on intelligibility, structure, relevance and interaction. No particular national accent is required.

Can strong slides compensate for a weak question-and-answer session?

Only to a limited extent. You need at least 70% overall and at least 60% in each component.

Does the certificate prove my general level of English?

No. It records a successfully assessed presentation and question-and-answer session and states the specific assessment scope.
