Disagreement and Criticism

Disagreement and Criticism – a Refresher

Sometimes, it is unavoidable to express disagreement or criticise something. You may know how to express your opinion, but need a few phrases to soften your statement. Here are a few you could use:

•     “I’m afraid …”

•     “You might want to …”

•     “I’m not sure …”

•     “It is a bit …”

•     “I am not particularly keen on …”

In some contexts, words such as “unusual” or “interesting” can be used to express criticism indirectly. The listener may need to pay attention to the context and tone of voice to understand the speaker's real meaning.

For example:

“Having fast food delivered to the wedding venue instead of booking a restaurant was a rather unusual choice.”

Exercise

At a conference, you have made a new acquaintance and talked about everyday topics. You have just tried the cucumber salad at the buffet, and discovered that it contains coriander, which you strongly dislike. Your acquaintance is about to heap some of it on their plate.

Task: Politely warn them about the salad, while keeping in mind that they might actually like coriander.
